Rattle or Buzz Type Noise from Exhaust System
(Install Clamp)

Models:

2001-2003 Oldsmobile Silhouette
2001-2003 Pontiac Aztek, Montana

Condition

Some customers may comment about a rattle or buzz type noise coming from the exhaust system. This noise can be duplicated by putting the vehicle in reverse, holding the foot brake and then varying the engine speed between idle and 2000 RPM until the noise is heard.

Cause

This noise may be caused by the double wall exhaust pipe. The inside pipe will vibrate and contact the outside pipe causing a rattle or buzzing noise.

Correction

Important:
Torque the clamp until rattle noise is eliminated (minimum 41 N.m (30 ft lb)).

Install a heavy-duty 63.50 mm (2.50 in) clamp (3), P/N 15712422, or equivalent, to the exhaust pipe (4) approximately 76 mm (3 in) (1) forward of the weld (2) on the catalytic converter. The purpose of the clamp is to slightly crush the outside pipe to remove the clearance between the inside and outside pipes.
