Removal Procedure



Engine Replacement

Tools Required

Removal Procedure





1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the intake manifold cover.
3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
4. Drain the cooling system.
5. Remove the powertrain control module (PCM).
6. Reposition the radiator inlet hose clamp at the engine.
7. Remove the radiator inlet hose from the engine.





8. Reposition the radiator inlet hose clamp at the engine.
9. Remove the radiator outlet hose from the engine.





10. Disconnect the heater inlet and outlet hoses from the engine.





11. Remove the brake booster vacuum hose from the intake manifold.
12. Disconnect the fuel and evaporative emission (EVAP) line quick connect fittings at the engine.





13. Disconnect the automatic transaxle range selector cable from the selector lever.
14. Remove the selector cable from the bracket.





15. Disconnect the engine harness from throttle actuator control (TAC).





16. Remove the engine harness clip (1) from the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) foul air tube clip.
17. Disconnect the following electrical connectors:
^ The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve
^ The EVAP canister purge solenoid





18. Remove the engine harness clips from the intake manifold.





19. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector (2) from the fuel injector electrical connector (1).
20. Remove the engine harness electrical connector clip from the belt shield.





21. Remove the engine harness clip (1) from the ignition coil bracket.





22. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector (1) from the ignition coil.





23. Remove the engine harness clip (1) from the bracket attached to the engine mount strut.





24. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector from the generator.



25. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
26. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer.
27. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector from the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S).
28. Remove the HO2S electrical connector clip from the ignition coil bracket.





29. Remove the engine harness clip (1) from the transaxle brace.
30. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector (2).





31. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector (1) from the transaxle.
32. Remove the engine harness clip (2) from the transaxle stud.
33. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.





34. Disconnect the following engine harness electrical connectors:
^ The oil pressure switch (1)
^ The knock sensor (2).





35. Remove the engine harness clip (1) from the oil level indicator tube.
36. Remove the starter solenoid "S" terminal nut (3).
37. Remove the engine harness lead (2) from the starter.





38. Remove the engine harness clip (1) from the oil pan.





39. Remove the engine harness nut (2, 3).
40. Remove the negative battery cable lead (4) from the stud.
41. Remove the engine harness ground wires (1, 5) from the transaxle studs.
42. Remove the engine harness bolt.
43. Reposition the negative battery cable and the engine harness.





44. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector from the air conditioning (A/C) pressure sensor (1).





45. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector (1) from the A/C compressor.





46. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector from the right wheel speed sensor.
47. Remove the engine harness clips from the lower control arm.





48. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector from the left wheel speed sensor.
49. Remove the engine harness clips from the lower control arm.





50. Remove the CPA retainer (2).
51. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector (1) from the HO2S.
52. Remove the engine harness clips from the heat shield and underbody.





53. Disconnect the following electrical connectors:
^ The knock sensor (1)
^ The crankshaft position (CKP) sensor (2)

54. Lower the vehicle.





55. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connectors (2, 4) from the instrument panel electrical connectors (3, 5).
56. Gather all branches of the engine harness and position the harness to the side and out of the way.
57. Remove the engine mount strut.
58. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
59. Remove rear propeller shaft (all wheel drive (AWD) only).
60. Remove the catalytic converter.
61. Remove the front tires and wheels.
62. Remove the lower radiator air baffle assembly.
63. Remove the engine splash shields.
64. Remove the stabilizer shaft links from the lower control arms.
65. Remove the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.
66. Remove the lower ball joints from the knuckles.





67. Remove the A/C compressor bolts and position the compressor aside. DO NOT discharge the A/C system.
68. Disconnect the drive axles from the transaxle.
69. Secure the drive axles to the steering knuckle/struts.

Caution: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion steering gear stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage may cause loss of steering control which could result in an accident and possible personal injury

70. Remove the intermediate shaft pinch bolt from the steering gear.
71. Install the J39580 to below the vehicle.





72. Lower the vehicle until the frame contacts the J39580.
73. Remove the frame bolts.
74. Raise the vehicle in order to separate the powertrain/frame assembly from the vehicle.
75. Remove the starter motor.





76. Remove the transaxle cover bolts.
77. Remove the transaxle covers.
78. Remove the torque converter bolts.





79. Remove the engine mount lower nuts.





80. Remove the transaxle brace bolts, if equipped with regular production option (RPO) M76.
81. Remove the transaxle brace.





82. Remove the transaxle brace bolts, if equipped with RPO M76.
83. Remove the transaxle brace.
84. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe.
85. Install an engine hoist to the engine.





86. Remove the transaxle to engine bolts/stud.
87. Support the transaxle.





88. Remove the transaxle to engine bolt/stud.
89. Separate and remove the engine from the transaxle/frame.
90. Remove the flywheel.
91. Install the engine to the engine stand.
92. Remove the drive belt.
