Intermediate Steering Shaft Seal Replacement
Tools Required
J 42640 Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin
Removal Procedure
1. Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key from the ignition lock cylinder in order to lock the steering column.
2. Install J 42640 to the steering column.
3. Remove the left closeout panel.
4. Disconnect the intermediate shaft seal from the steering column.
5. Remove the intermediate shaft to steering column pinch bolt.
6. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering column.
7. Collapse the intermediate shaft in order to gain clearance.
8. Cut 3 1-inch slits in the insulation over the seal bolts in order to access the seal bolts.
9. Remove the intermediate shaft seal bolts.
Important: The intermediate shaft does not need to be removed from the vehicle.
10. Remove the intermediate shaft seal from the inside of the vehicle.
11. If the lower intermediate shaft seal remains, then remove the seal from the intermediate shaft through the inside of the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
1. Collapse the lower intermediate shaft seal into the upper intermediate shaft seal.
2. Install the intermediate shaft seal over the intermediate shaft from inside the vehicle.
3. Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering column.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice.
4. Install the upper intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
Tighten the intermediate shaft seal bolts to 48 N.m (35 lb ft).
5. Install the intermediate shaft seal bolts.
Tighten the intermediate shaft seal bolts to 3 N.m (27 lb in).
6. Connect the intermediate shaft seal to the steering column.
Important: Rotate the lower seal in order to obtain proper shaft to seal clearance.
7. Install the left closeout panel.
8. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
9. Connect the lower intermediate shaft seal to the steering gear.
10. Lower the vehicle.
