Engine: Service and Repair


EXC. CAMARO & 1984-88 CORVETTE

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove air cleaner.
2. Mark position of hinges for reassembly, then remove hood.
3. Drain cooling system, remove radiator hoses, and disconnect heater hoses from engine.
4. On models with A/C, disconnect electrical connector from compressor clutch and ground wire from bracket, remove compressor and secure aside.
5. On V6-231 engines, remove fan blade, pulleys and shroud. On all other engines, remove fan shroud and radiator. On models with automatic transmission, disconnect and plug cooler lines.
6. Remove power steering pump retaining bolts, if equipped, and secure pump aside.
7. Disconnect accelerator linkage at throttle lever and bracket. Disconnect vacuum hoses to body mounted accessories and fuel hoses at fuel pump, then plug fuel hoses.
8. Disconnect battery and chassis ground straps from engine.
9. Disconnect electrical connectors from alternator, distributor or remote mounted coil and all engine mounted switches and accessories.
10. Remove engine harness from retaining clips and secure aside.
11. Raise and support vehicle and drain crankcase.
12. Disconnect exhaust pipes and AIR pipe from manifolds, and remove front exhaust and cruise control brackets, if equipped.
13. Disconnect electrical connectors and battery cable from starter, or remove starter.
14. Remove flywheel shield and remove bolts securing torque converter to flex plate, if equipped. Mark position of converter in relation to flex plate for reassembly.
15. Remove motor mount through bolts and bolts securing bellhousing to engine.
16. Lower vehicle and support transmission with suitable floor jack.
17. Attach suitable lifting equipment to engine lifting brackets, raise engine and transmission, and remove motor mount to engine brackets.
18. Separate engine and transmission while supporting transmission with jack. On automatic transmission models, ensure converter remains with transmission during engine removal and is properly seated prior to engine installation.
19. Lift and remove engine after disconnecting any remaining harness connectors.
20. Reverse procedure to install.
