SUBJECT: SHIFT "BUSYNESS" (CYCLING BETWEEN FOURTH AND THIRD GEARS)
MODELS AFFECTED: 1982-1983 LESABRES AND ELECTRAS WITH "BY" MODEL THM 200-4R TRANSMISSION
Some 1982 and 1983 LeSabres and Electras with "BY" model THM 200-4R transmissions may experience a shift "busyness" which is most noticeable while driving up inclines and in cruise control. "Busyness" refers to cycling between fourth and third gear.
Beginning in late January, 1983, and starting with serial number 3BY-025, a new design control valve assembly went into production for all 1983 THM 200-4R "BY" model transmissions to correct this condition.
When servicing any 1982 or 1983 THM 200-4R "BY" model transmission produced before the above serial number for this "busyness" condition, order service package part number 8634987.
The service package contains:
(1) 3-4 Throttle Valve
(1) Bushing, 3-4 Throttle Valve
(1) Spring, 3-4 Throttle Valve
(1) Pin, Coiled Spring
(1) Instruction Sheet
Refer to instructions contained in the package as well as the service manual for assembly and disassembly procedures for the control valve assembly.
NOTICE: When servicing any 1983 THM 200-4R "BY" model transmission built after the above serial number, this service package 8634987 cannot be used, or a no fourth gear condition will result.
