Front Wheel Drive Transmission
FRONT WHEEL DRIVE TRANSMISSION R&RREMOVAL
1. Open hood and place protective covers on both fenders.
2. Disconnect negative battery cables.
3. Disconnect the speedometer cable at the transmission.
4. Remove the air cleaner assembly and install J-26996-1 cover.
Downshift and T.V. Cable:
5. Disconnect the T.V. cable from the carburetor throttle lever.
6. Disconnect the T.V. cable from the bracket by depressing both retainers and sliding the cable out.
Engine Support Bar (Typical):
7. Install engine holding fixture J-22825-02.
8. Remove the top and two left upper Final Drive to transmission bolts.
9. Remove the remaining accessible engine to transmission bolts (5).
10. Raise vehicle.
11. Remove the starter assembly and disconnect TCC connections.
Oil Cooler Pipe Routing - Typical Gas Engine:
12. Disconnect the transmission cooler lines and plug the openings.
13. Loosen the left upper converter cover bolt and remove the remaining screws.
14. Disconnect exhaust pipe connection to left manifold. Disconnect right manifold exhaust pipe at manifold. Disconnect catalytic converter hanger bolts (2). Lower exhaust system approximately 5" and support.
15. Remove (4) crossmember bolts and crossmember (strut, etc.).
16. Position a transmission jack under transmission.
17. Remove the three remaining Final Drive to transmission bolts.
18. Remove the torque converter to flywheel bolts.
19. Disconnect the shift linkage at the transmission.
20. Remove the Final Drive support bracket bolt.
21. Remove the right transmission mount through bolt and three bracket bolts.
22. Remove left transmission mount through bolt. Remove lower bracket to transmission bolt. Raise transmission assembly approximately 2" for access to (2) remaining upper bracket to transmission bolts.
^ Remove remaining transmission to engine bolt.
23. Carefully lower the transmission while disengaging the Final Drive.
24. Install torque converter holding Tool 3-21366 and remove transmission from the vehicle.
INSTALLATION
^ Always replace the Final Drive to transmission gasket. To install transmission, reverse removal procedure. To assist in the engagement of the Final Drive to transmission splines, make sure that the Final Drive to transmission mounting faces are in alignment with each other. After the splines are engaged, loosely install two Final Drive to transmission lower attaching bolts. Time can be saved by installing two engine to transmission bolts from above first to aid alignment.
^ After the Final Drive and transmission are mated align the transmission with the engine and install the remaining attaching bolts. Before installing the flex plate to converter bolts, make certain that the weld nuts on the converter are flush with the flex plate and the converter rotates freely by hand in this position. Then hand start all three bolts and tighten finger tight. This will insure proper converter alignment. Torque all bolts to specifications.
