Disassemble
1. Remove oil pan and gasket.2. Remove oil filter intake pipe and 0-rings. 0-rings may be located inside oil pump bore.
3. Disconnect electrical connector leads from transmission case and pressure switches on control valve assembly.
4. Using a suitable tool, compress electrical connector tangs and remove electrical connector and O-ring from transmission case.
5. Remove bolts, clips and solenoid assembly from transmission case.
6. Remove control valve assembly as follows:
a. Remove throttle lever and bracket assembly. Do not bend throttle lever link The T.V. exhaust valve lifter and spring may separate from the throttle lever and bracket assembly.
b. Remove manual detent roller, spring, signal oil pipe clip and signal oil pipe.
c. On vehicles equipped with Computer Command Control, remove 4-3 pressure switch.
d. Remove control valve assembly attaching bolts.
e. Position a finger over manual valve bore and remove control valve assembly.
7. Remove three check balls from top of spacer plate to valve body gasket.
8. Position control valve assembly so spacer plate is facing upward.
9. Remove bolts, 1-2 accumulator housing, spring, gasket and plate.
10. Remove 1-2 accumulator piston, from accumulator housing. If necessary, apply low pressure compressed air to accumulator housing orifice to remove 1-2 accumulator piston.
11. Remove control valve assembly gaskets and spacer plate.
12. Remove 3-4 accumulator spring, piston and pin from transmission case.
13. Remove eight check balls, from transmission case core passages.
14. Remove bolts, governor cover and gasket.
15. Remove governor assembly from transmission case. If necessary, rotate output shaft counterclockwise to remove governor. Do not use any type of pliers to remove governor assembly from transmission case.
16. Using a suitable screwdriver and too No. J29714 or equivalent to secure intermediate servo cover, re move snap ring, intermediate service cover and seal ring. Intermediate servo cover seal ring may be
located inside transmission case.
17. Remove intermediate servo piston and band apply pin assembly.
18. Check for proper intermediate band apply pin as follows:
a. Install tool No. J25014-2 or equivalent, into intermediate servo bore and secure with snap ring. Ensure gap on snap ring aligns with slot on transmission case.
b. Install pin No. J25014-1 or equivalent onto tool No. J25014-2. Ensure tapered pin end is properly seated against band apply lug. Ensure band anchor pin is properly seated in transmission case and band anchor lug.
19. Position a dial indicator onto top portion of tool No. J25014-2 and set dial indicator to zero. Tool No. J25014-2 must be seated completely against intermediate servo cover snap ring.
20. Align stepped pin on tool No. J25014-1 with torque arm on tool No. J25014-2. If band selection pin does not register between high and low limits, check for possible problem with intermediate band, direct clutch housing or transmission case.
21. Using a torque wrench, apply 100 inch lbs (12 Nm) torque to hex nut on side of gauge and slide dial indicator over pin tool No. J25014-1. Check dial indicator reading and refer to chart. Dial indicator travel is reversed, making the readings backward. On an indicator which ranges from 0-100, a 0.020 inch (0.5 mm) travel will read 0.080 inch (2 mm), a 0.060 inch (1.5 mm travel will read 0.040 inch (1 mm. The identification groove is located on band end of pin.
22. Remove tools No. J25014-2 and J25014-1.
23. Check third accumulator check valve for the following:
a. Missing check ball.
b. Check ball binding or stuck-in oil tube.
c. Oil feed slot in tube missing or restricted, improperly assembled, loosely installed or not completely seated into transmission case.
24. If third accumulator check valve requires replacement, perform the following:
a. Using a No. 4 (6.3 mm) easy out, remove check valve assembly from transmission case.
b. Install new check valve assembly, small end first into transmission case. Position oil feed slot into tube so slot faces intermediate servo cover.
c. Using a hammer and a 3/8 (9.5 mm) diameter metal rod, drive check valve assembly until check valve completely seats into third accumulator transmission case bore.
25. Refer to chart, and check overdrive unit endplay as follows:
a. Using tool No. J25013-1 or equivalent, install onto output shaft sleeve, and tool No. J29332-1 or equivalent onto end of transmission case.
b. Position transmission vertically. Remove oil pump to transmission case bolt and washer and replace with an 11 inch (278 mm) bolt and locking nut. Using tool No. J25022 or equivalent, install onto tool No. J24773-5 and sition onto end of turbine shaft. Install a dial indicator and clamp assembly onto bolt, positioning dial indicator point cap nut onto top surface of tool No. J24773-5.
c. Apply and maintain approximately a 3 lb. force in an upward direction to tool No. J24773-5 and set dial indicator to zero. Performing procedure step c, will eliminate the tolerance difference between turbine shaft snap ring and overdrive carrier.
d. Increase force to approximately 20 lbs. and read dial indicator. Overdrive unit endplay should be 0.004-0.027 inch (0.10-0.81 mm). Selective thrust washer controlling endplay limit is located between pump cover and overrun clutch housing. If it is necessary to increase or decrease washer thickness, and select correct washer to be used.
26. Remove pump oil seal, if necessary.
27. Remove pump to transmission case bolts and washers.
28. Read "Transmission Pump Removal." Using tool No. J24773-5 or equivalent, remove pump assembly, gasket and oil deflector plate.
29. Remove snap ring from fourth clutch plate.
30. Remove overdrive assembly and fourth clutch plates from transmission case.
31. Remove fourth clutch plates from overdrive assembly and steel plate from transmission case.
32. Remove overdrive internal gear to carrier thrust washer.
33. Remove overdrive internal gear and support thrust washer from transmission case.
34. Install tool No. J29334-1 or equivalent onto fourth clutch spring and retainer assembly, and tool No. J29334-4 or equivalent onto transmission case governor cover and retainer assembly, and remove fourth clutch snap ring, spring and retainer assembly.
35. Refer to front unit endplay chart, and check front unit endplay as follows:
a. Force forward clutch shaft downward and install tool No. J29337 or equivalent, onto end of forward clutch shaft
b. Position a dial indicator and clamp assembly with dial indicator point onto top portion of tool No. J29337.
c. Move output shaft upward by turning adjusting screw on tool No. J29332-1 until white or scribed line on tool No. J25013-1 sleeve begins to disappear and set dial indicator to zero.
d. Pull tool No. J29337 upward and read endplay. Front unit endplay should be 0.022-0.051 inch (0.56-1.30 mm). Selective thrust washer controlling endplay limit is located between output shaft and forward clutch shaft If it is necessary to increase or decrease washer thickness, and select correct washer to be used.
e. Remove dial indicator, clamp assembly and tool No. J29337.
f. Do not remove tool Nos. J29332-1 or J25013-1.
36. Using a suitable tool, remove two center support screws from transmission case.
37. Remove center support snap ring, from transmission case.
38. Install tool No. J29334-1 onto center support and secure using fourth clutch spring snap ring.
39. Using tool No. J29334-1 with slide hammer tool No. J7004, remove center support. Ensure center support bolts on control valve assembly side have been removed.
40. Remove direct clutch thrust washer from center support. Thrust washer may be stuck to the back of the direct clutch.
41. Install tool No. J29337 onto end of forward clutch shaft and remove direct and forward clutch shaft assemblies.
42. Remove direct clutch assembly from forward clutch. The direct clutch thrust washer may stick to the end of the direct clutch housing when removing direct clutch assembly from forward clutch.
43. Remove intermediate band assembly.
44. Remove band anchor pin, from valve body.
45. Remove output shaft to forward clutch shaft front selective washer. Selective washer may be stuck to end of the forward shaft.
46. Check rear unit endplay as follows:
a. Loosen tool No. J29332 adjusting screw, on output shaft and push output shaft downward.
b. Install gauge clamp, dial indicator and plunger extension tool No. J7057 onto transmission case.
26. Position plunger extension against output shaft end and set dial indicator to zero.
c. Move output shaft upward by turning tool No. J29332 adjusting screw, until white or scribed line on sleeve of tool No. J25013 begins to disappear, then check dial indicator reading. Rear unit endplay should be 0.004-0.025 inch (0.10-0.64 mm). Selective washer controlling rear unit endplay limit is located between front internal gear thrust washer and output shaft snap ring. It is necessary to increase or decrease washer thickness, to obtain correct rear unit endplay. Refer to rear unit endplay chart, for correct washer thickness to be used.
d. Remove dial indicator and clamp assembly. Do not remove tools No. J25013 and J29332.
e. Using a suitable tool, remove selective washer snap ring from output shaft
47. Remove front internal gear, rear selective thrust washer and thrust washer, from transmission case. Remove rear selective washer and thrust washer from front internal gear.
48. Remove front carrier and thrust bearing assembly from transmission case. The front sun gear to front carrier thrust bearing assembly and race may fall out as the front carrier is removed from transmission case.
49. Remove front sun gear and thrust bearing assembly from transmission case. Only one thrust race is used on the front sun gear thrust bearing.
50. Remove input drum and rear sun gear from transmission case. Remove thrust washer from rear of input drum or from reverse clutch housing.
51. Using a suitable tool, remove Lo and reverse clutch housing cup plug from transmission case.
52. Remove Lo and reverse clutch housing snap ring from transmission case.
53. Using tool No. J28542, remove Lo and reverse clutch housing assembly and spacer from transmission case. Ensure governor has been removed before proceeding with step 54.
54. Remove remaining reat unit components and position aside.
55. Remove roller clutch and rear carrier assembly from output shaft.
56. Remove rear internal gear thrust washer from rear carrier or inside of rear internal gear.
57. Remove Lo and reverse clutch plates from output shaft.
58. Remove rear sun gear thrust bearing from internal gear.
59. Remove rear internal gear from output shaft.
60. Position transmission horizontally and remove tools No. J25013-1 and J29332 from transmission case. Position transmission vertically with rear end up and if necessary, remove rear oil seal.
61. Position transmission horizontally with oil pan side up.
62. Remove manual shaft and parking linkage if necessary as follows:
a. Remove hex nut, securing detent lever to manual shaft
b. Remove parking lock actuator rod and inside detent lever assembly.
c. Remove manual shaft retaining pin and manual shaft from transmission case.
d. Check manual shaft seal for damage and replace as required.
e. Remove parking lock bracket and parking lock pawl shaft retaining pin.
f. Using a suitable tool, remove parking pawl cup plug, parking pawl shaft, parking pawl and return spring.
