ATTN: SERVICE MANAGERS BE SURE TO REVIEW THIS INFORMATION WITH YOUR SERVICE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL
General Motors has determined that some 1982-84 Century, Skyhawk, Skylark, and 1985 Electras equipped with power steering may exhibit a temporary reduction of power steering assist when the vehicle is started cold. After a short period of engine operation, full assist is restored.
A special policy has been established to cover this condition for a period of five years or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service.
Correction of this condition will consist of installation of a seal service kit. A quantity of seal service kits have been preshipped to dealerships, along with a service procedure training video tape and all necessary special tools, on a no charge basis. Additional parts, Part Number 26010340, Seal Service Kit, are to be obtained from GMSPO.
Properly documented customer claims for previously paid repairs for this condition will be reimbursed. Complete details are included in Buick Service Bulletin 85-POL-2 which you will receive shortly.
Customers will be notified of this Special Policy by a news release scheduled to be issued January 21, 1988, which follows:
DETROIT--General Motors is making available a Special Policy of five years or 50,000 miles to cover repair of a possible temporary reduction in power steering assist on certain front-wheel-drive cars produced between 1982 and 1985.
Some of the vehicles may experience reduced power steering assist upon first starting the car, primarily in cold weather. Once the system warms up--usually in one or two minutes--normal power steering assist is restored. The condition does not occur while the vehicle is being driven after warmup.
Under the Special Policy, GM will reimburse owners who in the past paid to have the condition corrected during the first five years or 50,000 miles of operation, provided they present proper receipts to their dealer. GM dealers also will repair free of charge power steering systems that exhibit the condition within the time and mileage limits of the Special Policy.
Included in the Special Policy are 1982-84 subcompact, compact and intermediate cars, and 1985 model full-size luxury cars.
Specific models included are as follows:
^ 1982-84 Buick Skyhawk, Skylark and Century; Cadillac Cimarron; Chevrolet
Cavalier, Citation and Celebrity; Oldsmobile Firenza, Omega and Cutlass Ciera and Pontiac Sunbird, Phoenix and 6000 models.
^ 1985 Buick Electra, Cadillac DeVille and Oldsmobile Ninety-eight models.
