Date Oct. '83
SUBJECT: POWER STEERING GEAR CLUNK
MODELS AFFECTED: 1982 & 1983 SKYHAWKS
Some 1982 & 1983 Skyhawks built prior to October 25, 1982 may experience a clunking noise when reversing steering direction. This can be caused by the piston ring to ring land side clearance of the piston and rod assembly. To verify this condition, it will be necessary to disassemble the gear mechanism If a .010" feeler gauge can be placed at any point between the piston and piston ring, this is evidence of excessive clearance.
Replacement of the piston rod assembly and piston ring kit are necessary to correct this condition.
