Timing Chain: Service and Repair
Fig. 10 Valve timing marks:
1. With front cover removed, as outlined in ``Engine Front Cover, Replace'', temporarily install balancer bolt and washer in end of crankshaft. Turn crankshaft so timing marks on sprockets are as close together as possible. Remove balancer bolt and washer using a sharp blow on wrench handle, so bolt can be removed without changing position of sprockets.
2. Remove crankshaft oil slinger, timing chain dampener (if applicable) and camshaft sprocket bolts. On V6---231 SFI engines, remove cam sensor magnet assembly.
3. Using two large screwdrivers, alternately pry off sprockets and chain.
4. Thoroughly clean all parts that are to be reused.
5. Assemble timing chain on sprockets and slide sprockets and chain assembly onto camshaft and crankshaft with timing marks aligned as shown in Fig. 10.
6. Install cam sensor magnet assembly, if applicable, then the sprocket bolts.
7. Install oil slinger, camshaft thrust button, timing chain dampener, if equipped, and engine front cover.
