Turbine Shaft












1. Check Teflon oil seals on turbine shaft for damage. Do not remove oil seals unless replacement is required. If replacement is required, proceed as follows:

a. Using a knife, cut and remove solid Teflon seal ring from turbine shaft.

b. Position and lubricate seal installer tool No. J-29696-1 or equivalent, over turbine shaft.

c. Position solid oil seal ring over seal installer and carefully slide seal down to the seal ring groove. Re- move seal installer tool.

d. Lubricate inside of tool No. J-29696-2 or equivalent, push tool down over seal and turn.

e. Remove tool and ensure seal is properly seated in the groove.

2. Check snap ring, journals and snap ring grooves for damage.

3. Check turbine shaft for restricted oil passages.

4. Check for free operation of check ball in turbine shaft Replace if damaged.

5. Check cup plug for damage, replace if damaged.

6. Install overdrive sun gear onto overrun clutch hub with groove facing upward.

7. Align clutches in overrun clutch housing and install overdrive carrier assembly into overrun clutch. It may be necessary to turn overdrive carrier assembly counterclockwise to seat it properly in overrun clutch.

8. Install turbine shaft into overdrive carrier assembly and new snap ring onto turbine shaft A new snap ring must be installed as damage to transmission may occur if old snap ring is used.

9. Hold turbine shaft and install overdrive unit into transmission case.

10. Lubricate and install fourth clutch plates, into transmission case.

11. Install snap ring. Ensure compositioned-faced plates turn freely.

12. Install oil deflector plate with tangs facing upward.
