Rear Compartment - Water Leaks

Bulletin 84-10-20

Date Aug. '84

Ref. No.. 84-292-10
SUBJECT: REAR COMPARTMENT WATER LEAKS

MODELS AFFECTED: 1983, 84 BUICK LESABRE WITH LANDAU TOP

Rear compartment water leaks may be experienced on some Buick LeSabres equipped with rear "landau type" vinyl roof covers. This leak may be from an open roof rail seam.

FIGURE 1:

The open seam location may be underneath the front roof cover molding where the roof rail has been cut away to provide for installation of the molding (See Figure 1).

The repair to this condition is as follows:

1. Remove roof drip scalp molding over door opening.

2. Remove drip scalp molding above quarter window.

3. Remove upper interior quarter trim as described in the Fisher Body Service Manual.

4. From the inside of the vehicle, remove the two (2) fasteners holding the lock pillar applique.

5. Remove the lock pillar applique to gain access to the roof rail.

6. Drill three (3) 1/8" diameter holes through the remaining roof and side rail panels (Figure 1, View A, Section A).

7. Spread metal panels apart slightly and apply 3M #08531 drip check sealer (or equivalent) into the joint area after removing any corrosion.

8. Squeeze joint together and install three (3) rivets, 1/8" diameter x 1/4" long in the holes previously drilled in step 6.

9. Apply a coat of 3M #08531 drip check sealer (or equivalent) to the repaired joint area to insure a good seal. Inspect remaining areas of drip rail for open seams and reseal as necessary.

10. Reinstall previously removed moldings and trim.

11. Water test unit to insure a good repair.
