3. Separate inner and outer pistons, inner springs, spring retainer and cushion spring.

4. Inspect inner and outer piston seal rings for damage and free fit in grooves. Do not remove unless replacement is required.

5. Inspect springs and retainer for damage.

6. Inspect intermediate servo cover and piston assembly for proper combination and usage, see image.

7. Check for proper intermediate band apply pin as described under "Transmission Disassembly."

Disassembly, Assembly & Installation

1. Remove snap ring, see image, then separate band apply pin and retainer.

2. To assemble, install retainer on band apply pin, then install snap ring.

3. If removed, install inner and outer servo piston seal rings and/or apply-pin seal rings. Make sure cut ends are assembled in same relationship as cut, see image. Make sure rings are seated in groove to prevent damage to rings. Retain with petroleum jelly. The intermediate servo cover seal ring must be well lubricated to prevent damage or cutting of ring.

4. Install intermediate servo assembly. Tap lightly with plastic hammer if necessary. Make sure tapered end of band apply-pin is properly located against the band apply lug.

5. Using tool J-28493, depress servo cover, see image, then install retaining ring. Align ring gap with end showing in case slot.

6. Remove tool, then rotate transmission with oil pan side up.
