M/T - Difficult to Select Reverse Gear

Model Year 1983

Bulletin No. 83-187

File in Group 70

Number 34

Date Oct. '83
SUBJECT: DIFFICULT TO SELECT REVERSE GEAR

MODELS AFFECTED: 1983 SKYHAWKS WITH FOUR SPEED MANUAL TRANSAXLE

CONTROL ASSEMBLY:

The reverse inhibit mechanism on some transmission control assemblies (shifters) in 1983 Skyhawks equipped with the M19, four speed manual transaxle may not release when operator pulls upward on the lift trigger. When this occurs, the control assembly is unable to enter the reverse gate. Difficulty to release the reverse inhibit mechanism may result from breakage (usually at colder temperature) of plastic release parts such as the bellcrank or the nylon pull strap.

On vehicles where inspection indicates the control assembly condition described, replace the reverse inhibitor release parts mounted on the shift handle per the instruction sheet contained in Service Kit, part # 14081101. The kit, labeled Trigger and Pull Rod Unit - Transmission Control, is packaged to include the following:

^ Lift Trigger
^ Pull Strap
^ Bellcrank
^ Pawl Rod
^ Pawl Rod Spring
^ Boot Retainer
^ Instruction Sheet

Following repair, verify the proper operation of the control assembly by checking for reverse engagement and a smooth shift into each gear.
