Fuel Pump: Service and Repair
1. Ensure ignition switch is in ``off'' position.
2. Remove air cleaner and disconnect 12 volt lead wire from pump.
3. Use 3/4 inch wrench to support the inlet fitting firmly, then with 5/8 inch wrench disconnect inlet tube and plug openings.
4. Repeat step three to disconnect outlet fitting. Place a suitable rag under pump outlet side to collect fuel since this line is slightly pressurized. Do not overtwist pump outlet fitting; otherwise cover crimp may be loosened.
5. Remove pump mounting bracket nut and pump.
6. Remove dust plugs from openings on new pump, then install pump and bracket assembly on engine. Torque pump mounting bracket nut to 18 ft. lbs. Torque inlet and outlet fuel line fittings to 19 ft. lbs. In some instances, it may be necessary to adjust pump location by loosening the bracket screw and turning the pump to get the exact alignment between pump fittings and fuel lines. Be sure to torque bracket screw after the adjustment.
7. After pump is installed, disconnect fuel line at fuel filter and turn ignition switch ``On'' in order to prime and bleed lines. Use a suitable container to catch fuel. If pump runs with a clicking sound or there are air bubbles in fuel, check for leaks in line. Check all connections to see that they are dry and that no fuel is leaking. When clicking sound disappears, tighten fuel line at filter.
