CHART C-12A-1, COOLANT FAN FUNCTIONAL CHECK

The cooling fan on the "A" Series with 3.0L engine is a 2-speed, 150 watt system. It has a low-speed, solid state relay that has an ECM control. The cooling fan will operate at low speed whenever the ignition is "on" and the A/C select switch is set on A/C. The fan will go off when A/C is selected if TCC is also engaged.
The fan will go on high speed whenever engine coolant temperature exceeds approximately 226°F (108°C. This will occur regardless of A/C operation or TCC engagement.

1. Checks for short in relays or wiring. Normally fan would be "off."
2. Simulates coolant temperature switch closing. High speed fan should be "on."
3. Tests normal high speed fan operation when the coolant temperature switch closes. If hi-speed fan does not come "on" prior to "hot light" or "hot zone" on temperature gauge, reground Terminal "D" as in Step 2 to assist engine cool down.
