SUBJECT: GM GOODWRENCH 3.8L, V-6 ENGINE APPLICATIONS

MODELS AFFECTED: 1979-84 MODELS

GM GOODWRENCH ENGINE:




A GM Goodwrench engine (GM Part #25519459) is now available through WDDGM for some current and past-model vehicles equipped with 3.8 liter V-6, 231 engines. All GM Goodwrench engines are manufactured with new components.
Engine Application

Applications for the GM Goodwrench 3.8L, V-6 engine is as follows:

1979 Only engines with VIN Code "2"
1980-84 Engines with VIN Code "A"

Some 1979 and 1980 models will require use of original oil pan and oil pick up pipe.

What's Included?

Cylinder block assembly, connecting rod and piston assemblies, crankshaft (which will accept an automatic or manual transmission), camshaft, cylinder head assemblies; including valve trains, camshaft and crankshaft sprockets with chain, timing gears and timing chain cover, oil pump and screen, oil pan, four (4) quarts factory fill oil, and an installation instruction sheet.

What's Not included?

Intake manifold and related plumbing, exhaust manifolds, alternator, distributor with its coil and wiring, torsional dampener, flywheel, clutch housing, clutch and related parts, carburetor, fuel pump, water pump, spark plugs, pulleys and belts, (these parts are generally transferable from the engine that is being replaced).

When using this engine, the water pump, fuel pump, intake manifold and intake manifold end seals must be replaced.

The special instructions below should be followed when using this new assembly:

1979 - Remove and discard oil pan and oil pump suction pipe and screen
assembly from the new engine assembly. Take the same parts from replaced engine and install them on the new engine.

1980 - If the oil dipstick is stamped with part number 1257413 (red
handle), then follow the instructions above from 1979. If the
oil dipstick is stamped with part number 2550547 (black handle),
assembly can be used as supplied with this engine.
1982 thru 1984
- Three (3) accessory drive mounting holes located front and rear of the cylinder heads must be tapped to M10 x 1.5 threads.

CAUTION: Care should be taken when performing this operation as the 3/8-16 threads can be stripped if tap is started improperly. After tapping the holes, the metric attaching bolts from the replaced engine can be used.

Service Parts

GM Goodwrench 3.8L, V-6, engines use current model parts. When servicing vehicles with 3.8L engines, it will be necessary to determine if a GM Goodwrench 3.8L engine has been installed. Each GM Goodwrench 3.8L, V-6 engine will have a distinctive label on the left rocker arm cover making the engine readily identifiable for ordering service parts.

Warranty Information

Any service parts warranty claims (case type "B" or case type "C") submitted to Buick for the installation of a GM Goodwrench 3.8L, V-6 engine will require zone authorization, and they are to be submitted using the following labor operation number. List the applicable engine part number in the "Failed Part Number" column, and "88" in the failure code column (See bulletin 83-188).

1979 - 1984 Models J1840 7.0 (All Models)

Add: a. With A/C - 1.3 "A" Car
- 0.3 All others

b. With P/S - 0.2 "B,C,E,G,"
With A.I.R. - 0.2 "B,C,E,G"
With Turbo - 1.2 "E" Car
" " - 1.6 "G" Car

Includes: R&R hood, belts, fan and flywheel cover, D&C exhaust pipes, fuel and vacuum lines, linkage, starter and hoses, drain and refill engine oil (if required) and coolant. Transfer oil pan and pick up tube, intake and exhaust manifolds, distributor, water pump and fuel pump. Also included time to transfer all required parts.
