Direct Clutch

1. Remove snap ring.

2. Remove clutch backing plate from direct clutch housing.

3. Remove clutch plates from direct clutch housing. Separate clutch plates from forward clutch plates.

4. Check composition-faced plates and clutch plates for wear or burring.

5. Check backing plate for scoring or damage.

6. Using tool No. J23327 or equivalent, compress retainer and spring assembly and remove snap ring. Remove tool No. J23327, retainer and spring assembly from housing.

7. Check spring and retainer for damage.

8. Remove release spring guide and check for damage.

9. Remove direct cutch piston and outer and inner seals from direct clutch piston. Do not remove clutch apply ring from the piston unless piston or apply ring require replacement.

10. Check direct clutch piston assembly for distortion and cracks.

11. Ensure direct clutch housing check ball operates freely. If check ball is damaged, replace check ball as required.

12. Remove center seal from direct clutch housing. Check direct clutch housing for cracks, wear and restricted oil passages.

13. Check direct clutch housing snap ring grooves and direct clutch bushing for damage.

14. Install clutch apply ring onto piston.

15. Install new outer and inner seals onto piston with seal lips facing away from clutch apply ring.

16. Install center seal onto direct clutch housing with seal lip facing upward.

17. Position tool No. J25010 or equivalent onto direct clutch housing, lubricate oil seals and install piston onto direct clutch housing. Use care when installing direct clutch piston past larger direct clutch snap ring groove. Groove could cut outer oil seal on piston.

18. Remove tool No. J25010 from direct clutch housing.

19. Position release spring guide over piston check ball and install retainer and spring assembly.

20. Using too No. J23327 or equivalent, compress retainer and spring assembly past snap ring groove and install snap ring

21. Remove tool No. J23327, lubricate and install direct clutch plates into direct clutch housing, starting with a flat steel plate then alternating with a composition-faced plate to a flat steel clutch plate.

22. Install backing plate with micro finish facing downward into direct clutch housing.

23. Install snap ring. Ensure composition-faced clutch plates turn freely.

24. Position direct clutch assembly aside.
