Removal & Inspection
1. Remove oil filter.
2. Remove oil pump cover attaching screws and the cover.
3. Slide oil pump gears from pump.
4. Inspect gears for wear and damage. Replace if necessary.
5. Remove oil pressure relief valve cap, spring and valve, Fig. 17. Oil filter bypass valve and spring is staked in place and should not be removed.
6. Inspect relief valve and spring. Replace if necessary.
7. Check fit of relief valve in cover bore. The clearance should be an easy slip fit. If excessive clearance is noted, replace valve and/or cover.
8. Check bypass valve for cracks and warping. Replace if necessary.

Assembly & Installation
1. Lubricate and install pressure relief valve and spring in cover bore, Fig. 17.

2. Install and torque cap to 35 ft. lbs.
3. Install pump gears and shaft in housing.
4. Check gear end clearance by placing a straightedge over gears and with a feeler gauge, measure clearance between straightedge and gears, Fig. 18. Clearance should be .002-inch, measure gears and pocket to determine which is out of specification, Figs. 19 and 20.
5. Check gear side clearance, Fig. 21. Clearance should be .002---.005 inch. If clearance is excessive, measure gears and pocket to determine which is out of specification, Figs. 19 and 20.

6. Check pump cover for flatness with a straightedge and feeler gauge. If clearance is greater than .001 inch, replace pump cover.
7. Remove gears and pack gear pocket with petroleum jelly and reinstall gears. The pump must be filled with petroleum jelly to prime the pump.
8. Place new gasket and cover on pump. Install and torque cover screws to 97 inch lbs.
9. Install new oil filter.
