Bulletin 84-8-5Date Nov. '83
Ref. No. 84-003-8
SUBJECT: INSTRUMENT PANEL, LOSS OF CLUSTER ILLUMINATION
MODELS AFFECTED: 1984 REGALS
Some early 1984 Regals, up to VIN EH405000, may experience an intermittent loss of instrument cluster lighting.
The condition may be caused due to a loose connection at the cluster carrier.
_SHIMS TO CLUSTER CARRIER:
This condition can be corrected by installing a 3 mm (1/8") shim as shown in the attached illustration.
Installation instructions are as follows:
1. Remove left hand trim cover.
2. Remove 4 (7 mm) screws holding cluster carrier to I/P.
3. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the split in the engine compartment if two-piece cable is used or transmission in order to gain slack.
4. Remove steering column trim cover.
5. Disconnect the shift indicator clip.
6. Lower the steering column.
7. Pull the cluster forward far enough to disconnect the speedometer cable and necessary hard wire bulbs.
8. Pull the gear selector lever down into low and pull the cluster out far enough to remove 1 (5 mm) screw holding, the VSS optic head to the speedometer.
9. Pull cluster connector out of carrier.
10. Using 3 mm (1/8") plastic shim stock, cut two (2) pieces 2 cm x 5 cm (3/4" x 2") and glue in place where shown in illustration.
11. Reinstall cluster connector.
12. Reinstall cluster assembly.
