Engine: Service and Repair
1982-85 RIVIERA
1. Remove hood. Scribe alignment marks on hood around hinge areas for alignment during installation.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove air cleaner.
3. Drain cooling system and disconnect heater hoses.
4. Remove fan, pulleys and belts.
5. Remove upper and lower radiator hoses and fan shroud.
6. Disconnect transmission cooler lines from radiator, then remove radiator.
7. Remove air conditioning compressor.
8. Disconnect all electrical wires and vacuum hoses.
9. On turbocharged engines:
a. Disconnect accelerator cable at carburetor.
b. Disconnect fuel pump lines and plug lines to prevent spilling fuel.
c. Remove power steering pump mounting bolts and position pump assembly aside.
d. Remove alternator, then disconnect engine to body ground straps.
e. Disconnect turbocharger outlet exhaust pipe from turbocharger.
10. On all except turbocharged engines:
a. Disconnect accelerator rod and throttle valve cable.
b. Disconnect fuel lines and plug lines to prevent spilling fuel.
c. Remove power steering pump.
d. Remove transmission cooler line bracket.
e. Disconnect left exhaust pipe.
11. Raise and properly support vehicle.
12. Drain engine oil, then remove starter.
13. Remove converter shield, then the flywheel to converter bolts.
14. On all except turbocharged engines, disconnect right exhaust pipe and remove splash shield.
15. Remove the right transmission to engine bolts.
16. Remove right output shaft support bolts, then lower vehicle.
17. Support the final drive using a chain, then remove the remaining transmission to engine bolts.
18. Remove front motor mount support bolts.
19. Remove final drive to engine bracket.
20. Remove engine using a suitable hoist.
21. Reverse procedure to install.
