Removal and Replacement

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then the speedometer cable.

2. Remove air cleaner assembly, then disconnect T.V. cable from bellcrank (diesel engine) or throttle lever (gasoline engine).

3. Support engine with suitable engine holding fixture.

4. Remove upper center final drive bolt, then the two lefthand exhaust pipe to manifold attaching bolts.

5. Remove upper transmission to engine attaching bolts and stud, then disconnect fuel line at transmission bracket.

6. Raise and support vehicle, then remove remaining final drive bolts and starter.

7. Disconnect converter clutch electrical connections from transmission.

8. Disconnect and plug transmission cooler lines, then remove flywheel inspection cover.

9. On vehicles equipped with V-8 engines, disconnect Y" pipe from left exhaust pipe.

10. Disconnect right exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.

11. Lower and support exhaust system approximately five inches, then remove crossmember attaching bolts and the crossmember.

12. Position a suitable transmission jack under transmission.

13. Remove torque converter-to-flywheel attaching bolts, then disconnect shift linkage or cable from transmission.

14. Remove final drive-support bracket bolt and the right transmission mount-through, and bracket bolts.

15. Remove left transmission mount-through bolt, then the lower support bracket-to-transmission bolt

16. Raise transmission about two inches and remove remaining upper bracket- to-transmission bolts and the last engine-to-transmission bolt

17. Carefully lower transmission while disengaging the final drive.

18. Install torque converter holding fixture and remove transmission from vehicle.

19. Reverse procedure to install. Torque starter mounting bolts to 30 ft lbs., transmission mount-to-frame nut to 40 ft lbs., transmission-to-engine attaching bolts to 35 ft lbs., flywheel-to-converter bolts to 35 ft lbs., final drive-to-transmission bolts to 30 ft lbs. and final drive-support bracket bolt to 35 ft. lbs.
