Engine - Idle Degradation and Dieseling

Bulletin: 84-6E-35

Date: July '85

Ref. No.. 85-274-6E
SUBJECT: ENGINE IDLE DEGRADATION AND DIESELING

MODELS AFFECTED: 1984 SKYLARKS EQUIPPED WITH 2.8L ENGINE (VIN CODE Z)

A condition of idle degradation (RPM fluctuation) may occur on some 1984 Skylarks when operating under any of the following closed throttle positions:

1. Braking to a stop.
2. Idle (park or in gear).
3. Turning steering wheel.
4. Engaging the air conditioner.
5. Switching the blower motor fan to the third blower position.

Also, engine dieseling may result after turning off the ignition.

If any of these conditions are encountered and cannot be repaired with currently published diagnostic and service information, it may be necessary to replace the throttle kicker relay located on the upper right hand side of the engine cowl, and reset the speed control per the Buick Chassis Service Manual.
