Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION


Tool Required:
^ J-28467 Engine Support


REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.

VIN E:

VIN 3:

2. Air cleaner and T.V. cable at engine.
3. Shift linkage at transaxle.
4. Install engine support.
5. Electrical connectors.
6. Three transaxle-to-engine bolts.
7. Vacuum line at modulator.
8. Raise car.
9. Left front tire and wheel assembly.
10. Pinch bolt from lower ball joint.
11. Brake line bracket at strut.
12. Drive axles from transaxle.

NOTICE: Some cars may use a silicone (gray) boot on the inboard axle joint. Use J-33162 on these boots, all other boots are made from a thermo-plastic material (black) and do not require use of a boot seal protector.





13. Frame-to-stabilizer bolts.
14. Stabilizer bolts at control arm.
15. Left front frame assembly.
16. Speedometer cable from transaxle.





17. Extension housing-to-engine block support bracket.
18. Cooler pipes.
19. Right and left insulator attaching bolts.
20. Flexplate splash shield.
21. Converter-to-flexplate bolts.
22. Remaining engine-to-transaxle bolts except one.
23. Position jack under transaxle.
24. Engine-to-transaxle bolt.
25. Transaxle assembly.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Transaxle assembly.
2. Engine-to-transaxle bolts and tighten to 75 N.m (55 lbs. ft.).
3. Converter-to-flexplate bolts.

Tighten
^ All bolts to 62 N.m (46 lbs. ft.). Retighten the first bolt after all three have been tightened.

4. Flexplate splash shield.
5. Right and left insulator attaching bolts and tighten to 55 N.m (40 lbs. ft.).
6. Cooler lines and tighten tube nuts to 27 N.m (20 lbs. ft.).
7. Extension housing support bracket.
8. Speedometer cable.
9. Frame assembly.
10. Stabilizer bar.
11. Fully seat drive axles.
12. Brake line bracket at strut.
13. Pinch bolt and nut at steering knuckle.
14. Left front tire and wheel assembly.
15. Lower car.
16. Vacuum line at modulator.
17. Remaining engine-to-transaxle bolts and tighten to 75 N.m (55 lbs. ft.).
18. Electrical connectors.
19. Shift linkage at transaxle.
20. T.V. cable at engine.
21. Air cleaner and negative battery cable.

ADJUST
^ Fluid level.
^ T.V. cable.
^ Shift control cable linkage.
