1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove intake manifold, then loosen and remove belts.
3. If left cylinder head is to be removed, remove dipstick, also remove air and vacuum pumps with mounting bracket if equipped, and position aside with hoses attached.
4. If right cylinder head is to be removed, remove alternator, also disconnect power steering gear pump and brackets attaching to cylinder head.
5. Disconnect wires from spark plugs, then remove spark plug wire clips from rocker arm cover studs.
6. Remove exhaust manifold bolts from head being removed.
7. Clean adjacent area to prevent dirt from entering engine, then remove intake manifold.
8. Remove rocker arm cover, then rocker arms and, if applicable, shaft assembly from cylinder head. Lift out push rods, keeping them in order to ensure proper installation.
9. Loosen all cylinder head bolts, then remove bolts and lift off cylinder head.
10. Reverse procedure to install. Torque cylinder head bolts to specifications in sequence shown in Figs. 3 or 3A. On fuel injected engines, torque intake manifold bolts to specifications in sequence shown in Fig. 4.
