Neutral Safety Switch: Service and Repair


MODELS WITH AUTO. TRANS. & KEY RELEASE
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Place gear selector in Neutral.
3. Gently rock switch out of steering column.
4. Disconnect electrical connectors, then remove switch from vehicle.
5. Connect electrical connectors to new switch.
6. Align switch actuator with hole in shift tube.
7. Position connector side of switch into lower jacket cutout.
8. Push down front of switch, ensuring switch tangs snap into holes in steering column jacket.
9. Adjust switch by placing gear selector in Park position. The switch main housing and housing back should ratchet, providing proper adjustment.
10. If readjustment is needed, move housing as far as possible toward Low gear position, then repeat step 9.

MODELS WITH AUTO. TRANS. LESS KEY RELEASE
These vehicles do not use a neutral safety switch. A mechanical block on the transmission gear selector prevents starting the engine when the transmission is in any gear other than Park or Neutral.
