Wipers - Inoperative or Continuous Operation

Bulletin: 85-9-8A

Date: Mar 1985

Ref. No.: 85-163A-9
SUBJECT: WINDSHIELD WIPER CONTINUOUS OPERATION

MODELS AFFECTED: 1985 ELECTRA

NOTE: This bulletin supersedes 85-9-8 dated February, 1985.

Some vehicles may experience a condition of inoperative or continuous low speed wiper operation after snowfalls or ice storms. If this occurs on a 1985 Electra it may be caused by a build-up of packed snow or ice in the park area of the wiper arm. When this build-up occurs, it may inhibit the wiper arm causing the drive pawl inside the wiper motor to bend..

Wiper Motor:

To determine if the parking pawl is bent, disconnect the four-terminal connector attached to the wiper cover and then remove the wiper cover. Inspect the pawl to see if it is bent; a bent drive pawl will be obvious as it will not fit all the way into the notch in the parking switch (See Figure 1) or it may be bound inside of the parking switch. If the pawl is bent, also inspect for damaged parking switch and gear assembly.

If the drive pawl is damaged, shaft assembly (P/N 22048614) should be used to repair the wiper motor. To install the new shaft assembly, follow instructions in Section 2 of the Fisher Body Service Manual for "C" style cars under gear replacement.
