Doors - Install Adjustable Outside Handle to Lock Rod

SUBJECT: ADJUSTABLE OUTSIDE HANDLE TO LOCK RODS
MODELS AFFECTED: 1984 RIVIERAS 1985 ELECTRAS (FRONT AND REAR DOORS) 1984 CENTURY AND SKYHAWKS (REAR DOORS)
When servicing a vehicle with adjustable outside handle to lock rods, it is important that all free play between the outside handle and the lock assembly be removed.
FIGURE 1 - PUSH BUTTON TYPE HANDLE AND LOCK ROD ASSEMBLY:
On push button type handles (see Figure 1), the lever (Item 1) must be held in the up position while rotating the rod (Item 3) until the end of the rod is aligned with the hole in the attaching clip (Item 2).
FIGURE 2 - LIFT-BAR TYPE HANDLE & LOCK ROD ASSEMBLY:
On lift-bar type handle (see Figure 2), rotate the rod (Item 2) while applying slight downward pressure on the lock lever (Item 3) to remove all free play until the end of the rod is aligned with the hole in the attaching Clip (Item 1).
After installing the adjustable rod to the outside handle, inspect the door lock system for proper operation.
