Bulletin: 86-7440-1Date: Sept. '85
Ref. No.: 86-007-7440
SUBJECT: THM 440-T4 TRANSAXLE REPLACEMENT/REPAIR PROCEDURE
MODELS AFFECTED: ALL MODELS WITH THM 440-T4 TRANSAXLE
Since introduction of the THM 440-T4 transaxle in April 1984, most units requiring service have been replaced by the Hydra-matic Division through the Transaxle Exchange Program. Effective August 26, 1985 the exchange program ended and dealers were advised to acquire replacement units from GMWDD. The replacement transaxle will be supplied to the dealer through use of the new Service Replacement Transmission Assembly Program (SRTA).
In conjunction with the initiation of this new program dealership technicians may, with zone approval, perform all service operations available for this unit after attending a new three (3) day training class soon to be available. On car service operations will be available to those technicians attending a new one day school that is currently available.
The reason for requesting repeat or first time attendance at the new three day training session prior to allowing extensive repairs to these units by a technician come as a result of the numerous changes, updates and new information received from the transmission exchange program.
The Service Replacement Transmission Assembly (SRTA) Program represents an additional method of service Buick dealers and Buick Motor Division can offer the customer should repair become necessary on a THM 440-T4 transaxle.. The SRTA program is specifically designed to reduce vehicle downtime for the customer and enhance quality repair in the dealership.

The following chart illustrates the repair comparison of the two options available to the Buick customer and dealer if diagnosis indicates that major repair is required on a THM 440-T4 transaxle.
A booklet that further outlines the details of the program has been issued to your District Service Manager and will be provided to each dealership shortly by your Business Management Contact division. Its suggested you review its contents upon receipt and discuss its application in your facility with your District Service Manager as soon as possible.
