Engine Cradle - Noise During Acceleration & Braking

Bulletin: 85-10-25

Date: June 1985

Ref. No..: 85-217-10
SUBJECT: FRONT END NOISE DURING ACCELERATION AND/OR BRAKING

MODELS AFFECTED: 1985 ELECTRA WITH 3.0L (LK9) AND 3.8L MFI (LN3) ENGINES

A "squeak, crunch or popping" noise may be experienced on some early Electras during acceleration and/or braking. The condition is usually a single pop.

New dimensioned lower insulators went into production around January 2, 1985. The revised lower insulators should be used where comments of cradle pop are noted. Rework of mounts explained in Bulletin 85-10-8A should be used only if replacement parts are not readily available.

The following steps should be used to replace the lower insulators:

1. Remove lower insulators.
NOTICE: Do not disassemble more than two mounts at a time in order to maintain cradle and front end alignment.

2. Replace lower insulators with:
25525868 in #1 position (front mount) 25525871 in #2 position (middle mount) 25525870 in #3 position (rear most mount) Two of each required per car. Soap or soap and water solution may be used as an aid in installation.

3. Torque cradle mounts to 103 N-m (76 ft.lbs.).
