Steering - Lubricating Joints That Have Grease Fittings

Bulletin 85-3-2

Date Aug. '84

Ref.No. 84-299-3
SUBJECT: LUBRICATING JOINTS THAT HAVE GREASE FITTINGS

MODELS AFFECTED: ALL 1984 MODELS & 1985 ELECTRAS

Wipe off all dirt from the grease fitting before lubricating the joint. Ball joints should not be lubricated unless their temperature is -12~C (10~F) or higher. During cold weather, the ball joint should be allowed to warm up as necessary before being lubricated. Use a low pressure grease gun on all joints to prevent seal damage.

Steering Tie Rods and 1985 Electra Rear Outer Suspension Adjustment Link (All Models):

Apply grease until grease flows out between seal and tie rod end housing.

Relay Rod (Rear-Wheel-Drive Models):

Apply grease until grease flows out around seal.

Idler Arm (Rear-Wheel-Drive Models):

Apply grease while pushing up and pulling down on the idler arm. (This will prevent "grease lock.") Apply grease until grease is seen at seal.

Front or Rear Ball Joints (All Models):

SUSPENSION LUBRICATION POINTS:

Apply grease slowly while watching grease seal. Apply grease until grease is seen bleeding from the seal. If the seal expands but no grease is seen, do not apply any more grease. Allow time for the grease to bleed from the seal. See Figure for 1985 Electra lube fitting locations.

All Joints:

Wipe off all excess grease.
