Low & Reverse Clutch










1. Compress spring retainer, then remove snap ring and inspect for damage or distortion, see image.

2. Remove retainer, waved spring, low and reverse clutch piston, inner and outer piston seals, and clutch apply ring.

3. Inspect clutch housing for damage. Make sure feed hole is not obstructed.

4. Inspect clutch housing bushing for damage or scoring.

5. Inspect clutch splines and snap ring groove for damage or burrs. Remove any burrs on splines or snap ring groove.

6. Inspect clutch piston assembly for distortion, cracks or damage.

7. Inspect clutch apply ring for damage.

8. Inspect clutch spring retainer and waved spring for damage.

9. Inspect clutch housing to case spacer ring for damage.

10. Install clutch apply ring on low and reverse clutch piston, then install new outer and inner seals on piston with lips facing away from clutch apply ring side.





11. Install seal protector J-25011, then using a smooth flat edged small screwdriver, install low and reverse clutch piston while rotating and pushing down into place, see image. Thoroughly lubricate all cutch seals with transmission fluid prior to installing piston.

12. Remove seal protector, then install waved release spring and retainer with cupped side down.

13. Compress retainer and install snap ring.





14. Using automatic transmission fluid, lubricate and install low and reverse clutch plates into case. Start with a flat steel plate and alternate with a composition-faced plate. Refer to "Clutch Plate Usage Chart" in see image.
