A/T - 125/125C Engine Stalls After Replacing Converter

SUBJECT: THM 125/125C

COMPLAINT:
On 1982 and up THM 125 non-lockup -- after the torque converter is replaced, the transmission stalls the engine when it is put into gear.

CAUSE:
A THM 125C converter was installed on a non-lockup unit.

Note
The 1982 and up THM 125 open converters are identical in outside appearance to the closed converters, but they do not have a clutch inside. The fluid flow into the converter on a non-lockup unit will immediately apply the converter clutch, once it is filled with fluid. IF A NON-LOCKUP 1982 and up converter is installed into a lockup transmission, -- obviously the unit will not lockup.
