Wheel Bearing Replace - Front

REMOVAL
1. Loosen hub nut with vehicle on ground.
2. Raise and support vehicle and remove front wheel.
3. Install drive axle boot cover, tool J-28712.
4. Remove and discard hub nut.
5. Remove brake caliper from support and suspend caliper from frame with a length of wire. Do not suspend caliper by the brake hose.
6. Remove three hub and bearing attaching bolts. If the old bearing is being re-installed, mark attaching bolts and holes for re-installation, Fig. 2.
7. Using tool J-28733 or equivalent, remove bearing, Fig. 3. If excessive corrosion is present, ensure that the bearing is loose in the knuckle before using puller tool.
8. If installing new bearing, replace steering knuckle seal.

INSTALLATION
1. Clean and inspect bearing mating surfaces and steering knuckle bore for dirt, nicks and burrs.
2. If installing steering knuckle seal, use tool J-28671 or equivalent to install seal, Fig. 4. Apply grease to seal and knuckle bore.
3. Push bearing onto axle shaft.
4. Tighten hub nut to fully seat bearing.
5. Install bearing attaching bolts and torque to 63 ft. lbs, Fig. 2.
6. Install caliper assembly and the wheel.
7. Lower vehicle and torque hub nut to 225 lb ft on 1982 models, 185-192 lb ft on 1983-88.
