A/T - 440T4 Harsh Apply/Shudder On Reverse Application

SIL 87-35 (Nov)

SUBJECT: 440 T4

PROBLEM:
Harsh apply, or shudder on reverse application

POSSIBLE CAUSES

1. Oil pressure too high, or too low (may be vacuum related)

2. Engine and transaxle mounts loose or broken

3. Reverse servo seal damaged, or pin binding in bore

4. No. 9 check ball mislocated, or missing from valve body.

5. Mislocated valve body gasket or channel plate gasket.

Some reverse bands may have incurred a harsh, or uneven break-in, causing an apply shudder. To correct this condition, install an improved reverse band - (Part number 8668012.

This band has a new configuration which will help provide a more even apply.

Along with the reverse band, check the 2nd clutch drum band contact area for stress in the form of hot spots, scoring, or burning.

Replacement of the 2nd clutch drum may be necessary.
