A/T - 440T4 Valve Body Removal & Precautions

TSB: 87-8 (Feb)

SUBJECT: 440 T4

USE CARE WHEN REMOVING A THM 440-T4 VALVE BODY

Never twist or turn the valve body -- always remove it with a straight pull.

REASON:

There are two items that may break, and/or one item that may get lost.

1. On the 1985-1/2 and later THM 440 T4, a small, thin, black orifice tube and 0-ring can easily be broken. (See Figure 1 for location) If left out, there will be a resultant too-early torque converter lock-up speed. Orifice tube is part # 8658060, and the 0-ring part is # 8658109.

2. The THM 440-T4 has a thermo-element attached to the spacer plate. If the thermo-element is damaged, the spacer plate must be replaced. Failure to do so will result in harsh engagement in drive when warm. (See Figure 2 for thermo element location)

3. On all THM 440-T4 units, thee will be a dowel pin that helps align the valve body and spacer plate to the channel plate. This small hollow dowel can easily be lost. (See figure 3 for the dowel location.)
