SUBJECT: Power Steering Switch Display on Diagnostic Equipment When A New Service PROM is Installed In a 1986 or 1987 Century, LeSabre or Electra/Park Avenue
TO: ALL BUICK DEALERS
ATTN: SERVICE MANAGERS BE SURE TO REVIEW THIS INFORMATION WITH YOUR SERVICE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL
Bulletins 86-6E-19A, 87-6E-8 and 87-6E-20 reference recalibrated service PROM part numbers to repair various driveability concerns. One of the calibration changes in these PROM's was a program which reduces unnecessary Idle Air Control (IAC) motor activity. On 1986 and 1987 Centurys, LeSabres and Electra/Park Avenues, the power steering switch will not automatically command an increase in idle speed or IAC counts. During power steering high pressure conditions, the IAC motor will now respond to low engine RPM rather than the power steering switch.
Therefore, a normal hand held scanner or CAMS terminal power steering switch display will read "OFF" at all times on these models. The Skylarks/Somersets and Rivieras will continue to read off/on or HI/LO respectively.
