Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures

1986 REGAL, LESABRE WAGON & ELECTRA WAGON
Troubleshooting
1. Check GAGES FUSE by observing instrument panel indicators.
2. If vehicle is low or compressor runs continuously for a few minutes, check the air hoses for leaks or bad connections.

Diagnosis
If the symptoms of a system do not match the symptoms in Fig. 28, test all the components in the system.
1. With ignition switch OFF, check that battery voltage is present at both the RED wires in the ELC compressor assembly connector and the ELC relay connector.
2. To test the actuator arm, raise the car and check that:
a. Link is attached to height actuator arm.
b. Wiring to ELC height Sensor is in contact.
c. Connector G189 is clean and tight.
d. Actuator arm height adjusting nut is tight.
3. To test the compressor motor, remove the connector from the ELC relay and connect a fused jumper between the following terminals with the ignition switch in the OFF position:
a. On LeSabre Estate Wagon & Electra Estate Wagon models, if the compressor runs, continue and test the vent solenoid. If the compressor does not run, check pin A of the ELC compressor assembly relay for battery voltage. If battery voltage is present, check the BLK wire (pin D) of the ELC compressor assembly for repair. If no wiring problem is found, remove the ELC compressor assembly for repair.
b. On Regal models, if the compressor runs, continue and test the vent solenoid. If the compressor does not run, check the DRK GRN and BLK wires to the compressor for opens. Check that G189 is clean and tight. If no wiring problem is found, remove the ELC compressor assembly for repair.
4. To test the vent solenoid, connect a fused jumper from the WHT wire on the ELC compressor to ground. Leave the connector on the assembly and the ignition switch OFF:
a. If the solenoid valve does not open and close, remove the ELC compressor assembly and install a new vent solenoid.
b. If the solenoid operates, and the actuator arm is operating correctly, but the system does not vent to lower the car, install a new ELC height sensor.
5. To test the ELC relay, with the connector connected to the ELC relay, connect a fused jumper from the YEL wire to ground. Leave the ignition switch OFF.
a. If the relay does not operate, install a new ELC relay.
b. If the relay is good, (compressor runs) and the actuator arm operates correctly, but the system does not turn on when the car is low, install a new ELC height sensor.
6. On Regal models, if the ``Car is Leveling'' indicator does not light and the ELC system is operating normally check condition of indicator bulb. If bulb is satisfactory, check DK/GRN and GRN wires for opens and repair as necessary.
