Direct Clutch Housing

1. Remove large snap ring, see image, then remove clutch backing plate and clutch plates from housing. Keep direct clutch housing plates separated from forward clutch plates.

2. Inspect composition-faced plates and steel plates for wear or burning.

3. Inspect clutch backing plate for scoring or damage.

4. Using tools J-23327-1 and J-6129, compress retainer and spring assembly and remove snap ring, see image, and inspect for damage or distortion.

5. Remove retainer and spring assembly from housing.

6. Inspect spring retainer and release springs for collapse.

7. Remove release spring guide and inspect for damage.

8. Remove direct clutch piston, then remove seals from piston.

9. Remove clutch apply ring from piston only if it requires replacement.

10. Inspect direct clutch piston assembly for distortion, cracks, damage and check ball for free operation.

11. Inspect direct clutch housing snap ring grooves for damage, then remove and discard housing center seal.

12. Inspect direct clutch bushing for damage or scoring.

13. Install clutch apply ring on piston, then install new inner and outer seals on piston with lips facing away from clutch apply ring side.

14. Install new center seal on direct clutch housing with lip facing up, then install seal protector J-25010 over oil seals. Use extreme care when installing direct clutch piston past larger direct clutch snap ring groove, as groove may cut outer seal on piston.

15. Using automatic transmission fluid, lubricate seals and install direct clutch piston, see image, then remove tool J-25010.

16. Install release spring guide with omitted rib over check ball in piston.

17. Install retainer and spring assembly. Retainer could locate in snap ring groove forcing retainer to compress springs and damaging retainer plate during installation.

18. Using tools J-23327-1 and J-6129, compress retainer past snap ring groove and install snap ring, see image.

19. Remove tools J-23327-1 and J-6129.

20. Using automatic transmission fluid, lubricate and install clutch pack, starting with a flat steel plate and alternating with a composition faced clutch plate, see image above step 19. Refer to "Clutch Plate Usage Chart" in image.

21. Install backing plate with chamfered side up, then install snap ring, see image. Make sure composition faced plates turn freely.
