A/T - 440T4 No Coasting 2-1 Down Shift

SUBJECT: 440 T4

PROBLEM: No coasting 2-1 downshift

1. Check for vacuum at the vacuum modulator. It must be equal to engine vacuum at all times. The modulator can be tested with a vacuum pump. It must hold 20 in Hg for 30 seconds.

2. Remove governor from transmission and re-install governor cover. Start engine, put transmission into "D". If transmission is then in first gear, you may have a bad governor or a cross leak feeding the governor circuit. The cross leak can be warped parts or blown gaskets.




3. If the transmission remains in second gear with the governor removed, you may have a stuck or broken 1-2 shift valve.
