Instrument Panel Pad Cloth - Loose or Peel-Back

SUBJECT: INSTRUMENT PANEL PAD CLOTH "PEEL-BACK"

MODELS AFFECTED: 1986 RIVIERAS WITH ASHLAND CLOTH TRIM (1ST TYPE)


Some 1986 Rivieras may exhibit a condition whereby the cloth covering the instrument panel pad may "peel-back" or come loose in various locations along the instrument panel pad and upper trim panel junction. This condition can best be observed from outside the vehicle looking down through the windshield at the top of the dash.

INSTRUMENT PANEL ASSEMBLY:




If this condition exists, it can be repaired by ordering the proper service kit from GMWDD, which includes instructions and illustrations (instructions and illustrations also shown in this bulletin following the Warranty Information). The service kits are listed in the chart below by color:

INSTRUMENT PANEL ASSEMBLY:




1.) REMOVE THE WINDSHIELD DEFROSTER GRILLE.

2.) REMOVE THE (3) SCREWS HOLDING THE UPPER TRIM PANEL.

3.) UNSNAP TRIM PANEL (7 PLACES).

4.) DISCONNECT HOSE AND WIRING HARNESS FROM THE SENSOR ASSEMBLY THAT IS ATTACHED TO THE BOTTOM SIDE OF THE UPPER TRIM PANEL.

5.) REMOVE THE UPPER TRIM PANEL BY LIFTING UP AND OUT.
NOTE: THROUGHOUT THE PROCEDURE, BE VERY CAREFUL AROUND THE PLASTIC WINDSHIELD BECAUSE IT SCRATCHES EASILY.

6.) CAREFULLY PEEL A SMALL SECTION OF THE FOAM BACKING AWAY FROM THE CLOTH IN THE AREAS THAT ARE DISTORTED. PEEL AWAY ONLY ENOUGH FOAM TO FIT A STAPLE IN PLACE (SEE VIEW A).

7.) STAPLE AN APPROPRIATE WIDTH OF CLOTH FILLER 100 mm OR 35 mm) BETWEEN THE TRIM PAD AND THE FOAM THAT WAS PEELED AWAY IN THE AFFECTED AREAS. (NOTE: A SHORTERLENGTH STAPLER IS EASIER TO USE)

8.) TUCK THE EXCESS CLOTH AROUND THE PLASTIC SUBSTRATE AND USE THE RETAINER PROVIDED TO SECURE THE CLOTH.

9.) LAY THE FILLER ASSEMBLY AGAINST THE TRIM PAD, LINE UP THE NOTCHES IN THE FILLER ASSEMBLY WITH THE SLOTS IN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL REINFORCEMENT.

10.) REPEAT STEPS ONE TO FIVE IN REVERSE TO REPLACE THE UPPER TRIM PANEL.
