Troubleshooting Hints
COMPRESSOR CLUTCH ENGAGEMENTDetermine whether the compressor clutch engages by placing the Mode Selector in the MAX position. A click can be heard and engine sound will change when the clutch engages. Alternatively, the clutch movement can be seen just behind the compressor pulley when it engages. Move the Mode Selector between MAX and OFF to verify that the clutch is operating.
REFRIGERANT CHARGE
If the clutch is engaging and there is no cooling or insufficient cooling, check that the compressor belt is not worn or loose. Set the temperature lever to COLD and the Mode Selector to MAX. If there is no cooling or very little cooling, feel the suction (cold) and output (hot) pipes of the compressor. If there is not a wide temperature difference, check for proper refrigerant charge.
If the clutch is not operating, first check the pressure of the refrigerant at the low pressure side service valve. If the pressure is less than 172 kPa (25 psi), check for proper refrigerant charge.
If refrigerant pressure is satisfactory refer to System Diagnosis to determine the failure condition. Testing and Inspection
TEMPERATURE DOOR OPERATION
If the temperature of the suction and output pipes of the compressor indicate good operation of the compressor, check the operation of the temperature door. Make sure the mechanical linkage between the door and the temperature lever is in working order. Move the Temperature Lever rapidly between the COLD and HOT positions while listening for the door to hit the stop at each and of its travel.
