SUBJECT: Input Sprag
If a 440T4 is disassembled down to the input sprag, the sprag should be carefully inspected and/or replaced. If the sprag is a first type, and has not failed, it should be replaced with a new first type sprag, part number 8658501, which is an improved part, and only includes the sprag, itself, without the races. The original sprag should not be re-used.
On.April 1, 1986, Julian date 091, a wider and more durable second type input sprag went into production. If the first type sprag has failed, the second type can be used to replace it, providing the following things are done:
1. Install the second type sprag, part number 8646985, which includes the sprag assembly, the inner and outer race and necessary parts for the assembly.
2. Install input sprag retainer, part number 8658796.
3. Install input sprag spacer, part number 8658797.
4. Machine the input carrier assembly, as shown in Figure 1. The measurement on the early type is .505", and should be machined to .375".
