Digital/Quartz Instrument Clusters - Exchange Program

Bulletin: 87-8-4A
Date: Jan., '87
Ref. No. 87-013A-8
SUBJECT: DIGITAL AND QUARTZ INSTRUMENT CLUSTERS AND GCC MONITOR

MODELS AFFECTED: 1987 SKYLARK, SOMERSET, CENTURY, LESABRE, ELECTRA, AND RIVIERA
NOTE: This Bulletin supersedes Bulletin 87-8-4 dated October, 1986, for correction of 1987 "C/H" Quartz Speedometer Exchange Unit Parts List and Description. Please discard original Bulletin and replace it with this one.

Buick continues with an exchange repair program for the optional 1987 digital instrument clusters on Century, Regal, LeSabre and Electra models; the standard digital instrument clusters on the Skylark, Somerset and Riviera; the standard and optional quartz instrument clusters on the LeSabre and Electra; and the standard Graphic Control Center (GCC) monitor on the Riviera. This program provides repaired units in exchange for inoperative ones at a cost substantially below new replacement parts.

These units are serviced with the exchange units listed in the following chart. Content of the exchange unit is explained on each page. The U.S. exchange units are available from the seven (7) U.S. authorized AC-Delco Service Centers listed in this bulletin, and Metric Canadian units are available from the Canada Service Center also listed in this bulletin.

An exchange unit may be obtained by telephoning the nearest service center listed in this bulletin. (For your convenience, all eight centers have toll-free numbers.) The requested exchange unit will be shipped via UPS within 24 hours, along with a memo billing. The memo billing will be cancelled when the inoperative unit is received by the service center from which you obtained the exchange unit. Should the situation arise where the service center called is not able to immediately ship an exchange unit, you have the option of calling another listed center. However, the first center called should be informed to cancel your order.

Please adhere to the following procedure when a vehicle requires dealer service for an inoperative unit:

1. Follow the diagnostics procedure in the Service Manual precisely and completely. Many conditions perceived by the observer to be in the unit may actually be with remote sensors and connectors. Proper diagnostics will identify the source of the condition and avoid unnecessary removal and shipping of functional assemblies to service centers.
2. When diagnostics are complete, and condition is determined to be in the unit, call one of the service centers, and request the appropriate exchange unit. On Skyhawk and Somerset, the service center will need to know if cluster is AC or Yazaki design. Illustrations of the 1987 Buick units are included in the chart with this bulletin to assist you in ordering the correct exchange unit. See pages 4 thru 12.

3. After the exchange unit is received from the service center, remove the inoperative unit by following the Removal and Installation Procedures in your service manual. Be sure to transfer the nonvolatile memory chip (NVM), if so equipped, from the removed cluster to the exchange unit. Use care in handling the exchange unit. Hands must be free of dirt and grease. Avoid touching electronic components in the unit, since electrostatic discharge can cause some components to fail.

4. Pack the inoperative unit previously removed from the vehicle in the reusable shipping container, together with all five (5) copies of the completed ACD 1078A warranty form. Be sure to include a description of the problem in the "Nature of Problem" area of the ACD 1078A Form to assist the service center in isolating the cause. All information except for dealer's siqnature must be typed. Failure to return the inoperative unit in the special reusable container can result in a $10.00 container replacement fee.

5. Enclosed in the reusable container is an addressed shipping label. Attach this label to the outside of the box and ship immediately to the service center from which you obtained the exchange unit. The dealer copy of the ACD 1078A warranty form will be returned to you and the memo billing will be cancelled upon receipt of the inoperative unit at the service center.

The success of the Exchange Program is dependent upon prompt return of the inoperative unit to the service centers. Your cooperation is essential to maintain sufficient exchange stock at each center.
