Drive Range-3RD Gear

As vehicle speed increases in second gear, governor pressure moves the 2-3 shift valve to the right against the combined forces of throttle valve pressure and the 2-3 throttle valve spring. When the 2-3 shift valve moves into the upshifted position oil pressure is exhausted from the input clutch, and applied to the third clutch and to the 1-2 servo release passage. At this time the input clutch and 1-2 band are released, and the second and third clutches are applied.

The drive link drives the input housing at the normal reduction and the second clutch drives the input carrier at turbine speed, while the third clutch and third roller clutch prevent the input sun gear from turning faster than turbine speed. The input sun gear and input carrier together drive the input internal gear, and force is transferred to the final drive from the input internal gear at a 1:1 ratio.
