June 16, 1987
SUBJECT: ENGINE DOES NOT STAY RUNNING ON INITIAL COLD START, INTERMITTENTLY WILL NOT STAY RUNNING ON DECEL, OR EXHIBITS A FALSE CODE 32 ON SOME 1987 CENTURYS, LESABRES AND ELECTRAS EQUIPPED WITH 3.8L SFI ENGINES (VIN CODE 3)

TO: ALL BUICK DEALERS

ATTN: SERVICE MANAGERS BE SURE TO REVIEW THIS INFORMATION WITH APPROPRIATE SERVICE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL

Some 1987 models equipped with a 3.8L SFI engine (VIN Code 3) may experience one or more of the following conditions:

^ Engine will not stay running on the initial start when the engine is cold (with proper fuel pressure and no leak down).

^ Engine intermittently won't stay running on decel under closed throttle conditions (with proper scanner readings and minimum air rate).

^ An intermittent "Service Engine Soon" light with a stored False Code 32.

If any of these conditions are experienced on a vehicle when the basic engine, controls and systems are performing properly, and cannot be repaired by using currently published service and diagnostic procedures, it may be necessary to install a new service PROM.

These PROM's are currently available through General Motors parts operations under the following Part Numbers:
