SUBJECT: REAR COMPARTMENT LID TORQUE ROD ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE
MODELS AFFECTED: ALL 1987 LESABRES
NOTICE: This bulletin is being reissued to add part number for left side torque rod, and to correct art and 2nd and 3rd paragraphs. Should show 1/2" breaker bar in art and 2nd and 3rd paragraphs.
If a rear compartment lid spoiler and/or luggage rack is installed, or incorrect deck lid operating effort is encountered on a 1987 LeSabre, the following procedure should be followed to obtain an accurate adjustment of the rear compartment lid torque rods.
CAUTION: The use of safety glasses and work gloves are recommended to minimize the chance of personal injury should the torque rod become disengaged from the removal tool when performing the following procedure.
On all LeSabres, except Sedans:
1. Prop lid in full open position to keep lid from falling.
FIGURE 1 - ADJUSTING OR REMOVING TORQUE ROD:
2. To increase the amount of effort needed to raise the rear compartment lid or to decrease the amount of effort to close the lid, reposition the end of the rod to the next notch towards the rear of the car using tool J-34194 or equivalent, and a 1/2" drive breaker bar (See Figure 1). With both hands on the ratchet handle, disconnect the torque rod from the top bracket and then from the lower bracket. Reconnect torque rod to lower bracket and then to top bracket.
3. To decrease the amount of effort needed to raise the lid or increase the amount of effort needed to close the lid, reposition the end of the rod to the next notch towards the front of the car using tool J-34194 or equivalent, and a 1/2" drive breaker bar. With both hands on the ratchet handle, disconnect the torque rod from the bracket and then from the lower bracket. Reconnect torque rod to lower bracket and then to top bracket.
4. If the torque rods are moved to their rear most positions and still haven't sufficient strength to support the rear compartment lid, replace both torque rods with heavy duty rods, available through GMSPO; Part Numbers 20737268 right and 20737269 left. For removal and installation of rods, follow procedure in the 1987 Body Service Manual, Section 7C-2.
On LeSabre Sedans:
The rear compartment extension springs are adjustable to increase or decrease operating effort.
1. Open rear compartment lid.
FIGURE 2 - EXTENSION SPRING AND HINGE ASSEMBLY:
2. To increase the amount of effort needed to raise the rear compartment lid, or to decrease the amount of effort to close the lid, loosen the screw (2 of Figure 2) by turning the screw to the left.
3. To decrease the amount of effort needed to raise the lid or increase the amount of effort to close the lid, turn the screw (2 of Figure 2) to the right.
