DCS NO. 87-16
GROUP NO. 6E
APRIL 29, 1987

SUBJECT: FALSE CODE 32 ON SOME 1987 CENTURYS, LESABRES, AND ELECTRAS, OR FALSE CODE E032 ON SOME 1987 RIVIERAS EQUIPPED WITH 3.8L ENGINES (VIN CODE 3)

TO: ALL BUICK DEALERS AND ZONES
ATTENTION: SERVICE MANAGERS

BE SURE TO REVIEW THIS INFORMATION WITH SERVICE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL.

Some 1987 Centurys, LeSabres, Electras, and Rivieras equipped with 3.8L engines (VIN Code 3) may intermittently exhibit a "Service Engine Soon" light with a False Code 32 or E032 stored in its memory. This condition does not affect driveability or emission; however, it may be a customer annoyance.

A new PROM is being developed, in the interim, which will correct this condition; however, it is not expected to be released until June. If this condition is experienced and cannot be repaired using currently published diagnostic and service information, it may be necessary to replace the Electronic Vacuum Regulator Valve (EVRV) with a later design.

The EVRV will correct most cases of a false code and is available to dealerships through Michigan Mailers under part number 25532523. To obtain a new valve at no charge, a dealership can call Michigan Mailers direct at (517) 723-8161, and provide the following information:

Part number being requested Dealership name and address Dealership code number Vehicle identification number

A Service Bulletin will be released advising the field of the recalibrated PROM as soon as parts become available.
