SUBJECT: ENGINE CLUNK OR GROUNDING NOISE DURING ACCELERATION OR SHIFTING
MODELS AFFECTED: 1987 RIVIERA EARLY 1988 RIVIERA (UP TO VIN JU400424)
NOTICE: This bulletin is being reissued to include the illustration that was omitted on 88-6-4. Please discard 88-6-4 and replace it with this one.
If above described noise condition is noted in the engine area during acceleration or drivetrain torque reversals, inspect the front engine mount bracket bolts (see Illustration) for presence and proper torques. If bolt(s) is (are) missing or low torque is noted, the following procedure should be followed:
1. Raise car.
2. Remove lower engine mount bracket bolt and discard (see Illustration).
3. Remove A/C compressor splash shield.
4. Inspect engine mount bracket to engine block bolts (2) for presence and tightness (100 N-m or 74 ft.lbs.).
5. Apply adhesive (Part Number 1052624 or 12345493) to the thread of the new lower engine mount bracket bolt (Part Number 11509843). Install new bolt and new washer (Part Number 14038397) and tighten to 32 N-m (24 ft.lbs.). If 32 N-m (24 ft.lbs.) is not obtained, inspect for stripped threads in the engine mount bracket. If threads are stripped, replace the bracket. Refer to the Chassis Service Manual for engine mount bracket replacement procedure. If bracket is replaced, install new lower bracket bolt and washer as described above.
6. Install A/C compressor splash shield.
7. Lower car.
