Fuel Pump: Service and Repair
MECHANICAL PUMP
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support vehicle.
3. Disconnect inlet hose and outlet pipe from fuel pump.
4. Remove two fuel pump retaining nuts and rotate pump upward to clear studs in block. Remove fuel pump from vehicle.
5. Clean block to pump mating surface and install new gasket over studs in block.
6. Install pump and pump retaining nuts and torque nuts to 15-22 ft. lbs.
7. Reverse procedure to complete installation.
ELECTRIC PUMP
1. Relieve system fuel pressure as follows:
a. Remove fuel pump fuse from fuse block.
b. Start engine and allow to run until fuel supply remaining in pipes is consumed, then crank starter an additional 3 seconds to relieve remaining pressure.
c. With ignition switch in Off position, install fuse.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable, then raise and support vehicle.
3. Drain tank, then disconnect sending unit electrical connector and ground strap.
4. Disconnect all hoses and vent pipes at fuel tank.
5. Support fuel tank using a suitable jack, then remove tank retaining straps.
6. Lower fuel tank from vehicle.
7. Remove fuel tank sending unit and pump assembly by turning cam lock ring counterclockwise.
8. Lift assembly from tank, then disconnect pump from sending unit.
9. Reverse procedure to install.
